"If you're looking for clever music, sometimes you have to dig way, way down through the underground until you find some guy in his basement recording stuff on a 4-track. That's where you'll find Matt Stein, the mattstermind of Los Angeles' Ape Has Killed Ape. He has guitars, a synth, drum machine and theremin, as well as a friend playing bass guitar for him. The songs weave through different noisy, pot-smoking styles and his voice reeks coolness - but like ACTUAL coolness, not detached Beck-style affectation. I'd call it homemade indie guitar hero psych for the "Now and Later" generation, which doesn't actually exist because those things will rip your fillings out but I like them."

"In this, the most unnerving of several ape-related cd's I've received in the past few months, the pioneering disco-punking noise clang of NYC's seminal dynamic duo Big Stick is twisted, like a furry pretzel, into some kind of neo-Satanic, rubber room, laptop lounge muzak. From outer space, no less. Ape Has Killed Ape is the deranged work of two LA pranksters, Matt Stein and Kurt Kassinoff, who manipulate everything from a Theremin to what sounds like monkey thigh bones to produce these 2 minute bursts of sleazy, slinky, Sci-fi nonsense. Chrome fans are gonna freak. Actually, everyone's gonna freak, only the Chrome fans will turn it up, and the rest of the party will just run outta the room. Me, I like 'em, especially since bitchin' song titles like "The Future is a Complete Rip Off", "Rock and Roll Volcano Man", and "Trapped in the Iommisphere" would have otherwise been squandered by some dopey stoner rock band. Foolish and fiendish in equal measure, Ape Has Killed Ape is pretty much what would happen if you trapped the house band at the local Starbucks inside the store for 6 months with nothing to eat but coffee beans, and nothing to watch on TV except Roger Ramjet videos and plumper porn. Crazy, man."
